What Do You Learn in NLP Master Practitioner Training?

Student working through the NLP Master Practitioner curriculum

Curriculum lists are usually the least useful thing a training provider publishes.

You read a set of terms you do not yet have meanings for, they sound suitably advanced, and you are no closer to knowing whether the program will give you what you need.

So rather than list the components of the NLP Master Practitioner course, this article goes through each one and answers the question that actually matters: what does this let you do that you could not do before?

The Components at a Glance

ComponentWhat It Lets You Do
Advanced submodalitiesChange how an experience is structured, not just how it is labeled
Meta ProgramsRecognize how a specific person filters information, and speak to that
ValuesDiscover what actually drives someone, including when they cannot tell you
Beliefs and presuppositionsWork with what a person considers possible
Parts integrationResolve genuine internal conflict rather than manage it
Time Line Therapy®Work with negative emotions, limiting decisions and limiting beliefs
Master HypnosisUse advanced hypnotic language with precision
Master Coaching and BreakthroughDeliver complete transformational work rather than single sessions
ModelingExtract how someone excellent does what they do, so it can be taught

Advanced Submodalities

At Practitioner level you learn that internal experience has qualities. An image has brightness, size, distance and location. An internal voice has tone, volume and direction. Adjusting these changes how the experience feels, often dramatically.

At Master Practitioner level you work with the structure underneath that.

Some submodalities are drivers, meaning changing them reorganizes everything else. Most are not. A Practitioner who adjusts several and gets a result does not necessarily know which one produced it, which means the next client may not respond the same way. Knowing the difference is what turns a technique that often works into one that reliably does.

Where it applies: anywhere someone’s internal representation of a situation is producing an unhelpful response. Anxiety about a specific recurring event, a memory that carries more weight than it should, a compelling future that is not compelling enough to act on.

Meta Programs

Two people attend the same meeting and leave with genuinely different accounts of what happened. Neither is lying. Their filters selected differently.

Meta Programs are those filters. They operate unconsciously and they determine what a person notices, what they discard, and how they generalize from it. Some people move toward what they want, others away from what they do not want, and telling the second group about benefits will not motivate them.

At Master Practitioner level you learn to recognize these patterns in someone’s language within a few minutes of conversation, and to communicate in the way that person can actually receive.

Where it applies: management, sales, recruitment, teaching, negotiation, parenting, and any relationship where you have been baffled that someone does not see something you find obvious.

Values

This is the largest single component and Dr Adriana James teaches roughly four days on it.

Two of those days cover the different ways of thinking that exist and the values each produces, because people at different stages of development genuinely value different things and are not simply wrong about it. The remainder covers the elicitation process, how to order values by priority, and how to change or add one.

The reason it warrants that time is that values determine motivation. Everything a person is moved to do, or not do, rests on them, which means most behavior does too.

And the complication is that the values people can name are the conscious ones, which are frequently the values they believe they ought to hold. The set actually driving their behavior sits below awareness. Discovering the gap between the two often explains years of someone’s decisions that had never quite made sense to them.

Where it applies: career decisions, team alignment, why a goal keeps not getting acted on, conflict between people who each think the other is being unreasonable, and your own decisions about what to do next.

Insider Tip From Dr Adriana James: I hear people say that someone has the wrong values, or no values at all. What they mean is that the person does not share theirs. Once that is understood, an argument turns into a negotiation. Two people who recognize they hold different values, and who understand what each other’s actually are, can find a shared one and point in the same direction. The disagreement frequently disappears without anyone having to be persuaded of anything.

Beliefs and Presuppositions

A belief is a generalization a person treats as settled, and it quietly determines what they consider possible.

The linguistic side of this is presupposition, meaning the assumptions built into a sentence that are not stated but must be true for the sentence to make sense. Learning to hear these in someone else’s language tells you a great deal about their model of the world. Learning to construct them deliberately in your own is one of the more elegant tools in NLP.

Where it applies: anywhere someone has ruled something out without examining it, which is most people about most things.

Parts Integration

For the situation where a person genuinely wants two incompatible things, and has been stuck between them long enough to have stopped expecting resolution.

Part of them wants the security of the job. Part wants the freedom of leaving. Most approaches try to help them choose. Parts integration works differently, finding what each side is actually trying to achieve at a level high enough that both turn out to want the same thing.

Run well, it is among the most satisfying processes in NLP.

Where it applies: procrastination that logic does not shift, decisions that have been open for years, self-sabotage.

Time Line Therapy®

Created by Dr Tad James and developed further by Dr Adriana James, and taught here at source.

It works with the way a person organizes memory through time, and with negative emotions, limiting decisions and limiting beliefs held from past experience. At Master Practitioner level the work goes considerably deeper than the introduction given at Practitioner level, including how to use it within a full breakthrough.

Where it applies: emotional responses that are larger than the current situation warrants, decisions made long ago that are still quietly operating, goals that keep not happening for reasons the person cannot identify.

This is professional skill development rather than treatment for any medical or psychological condition, and individual experiences vary.

Did You Know? Most of our values operate below conscious awareness, which is why asking someone what they value produces an incomplete answer. The conscious list tends to be aspirational. The unconscious hierarchy is what is actually running, and it is only accessible through a specific elicitation process rather than through introspection.

Master Hypnosis

Advanced hypnotic language, building on the foundation from Practitioner level. Precision in how suggestion is structured, and considerably more range in how it is delivered.

Where it applies: therapeutic and coaching contexts within your scope of practice, and more broadly in how persuasive and permissive language is constructed. Our overview of hypnosis covers the foundations.

Master Coaching and Breakthrough Sessions

This is the component that most changes what a professional can offer.

A breakthrough session is complete transformational work delivered as a structured intervention rather than as a series of appointments. It integrates the advanced NLP, Time Line Therapy® and coaching components into a single process with a defined outcome.

For anyone working with clients, this is a different proposition from hourly sessions, both in what it produces and in how it is positioned.

Where it applies: professional coaching practice, and any context where someone needs a genuine resolution rather than ongoing support.

Modeling

The process NLP itself came from. You study someone who does something excellently, extract the structure of how they do it including the parts they cannot articulate, and make it teachable.

Where it applies: capturing what your best performer does before they leave, developing your own capability by studying someone further along, and building training content that transfers rather than merely informs.

What Actually Ties It Together

Read that list and it looks like nine separate subjects. It is not, and the integration is the point.

Values explain why a belief formed. Beliefs shape what submodalities the person uses to represent a situation. Meta Programs determine which information reached them in the first place. Time Line Therapy® addresses when the decision was made. Parts integration handles what happens when two of these are in conflict.

By the end, you are not choosing between nine tools. You are perceiving one situation and the appropriate response is apparent. That is what integration means, and it is the actual outcome the curriculum is designed to produce.

How You Would Use This Tomorrow

ComponentSomething to Try This Week
Meta ProgramsNotice whether a colleague talks about what they want or what they want to avoid
ValuesAsk someone what is important to them about their work, then ask again about their answer
PresuppositionListen for what someone’s sentence assumes without stating
SubmodalitiesNotice where in your visual field you picture something you are dreading
PartsIdentify one decision you have held open for over a year
ModelingAsk someone good at something how they do it, then ask what they left out

Frequently Asked Questions

What is taught in NLP Master Practitioner?
Advanced submodalities, Meta Programs, values elicitation and utilization, beliefs and presuppositions, parts integration, Time Line Therapy®, Master Hypnosis, Master Coaching and breakthrough work, and modeling.

How much of the course is values?
Roughly four days, making it the largest single component. Two days cover the different ways of thinking and the values each produces, and the rest covers elicitation, hierarchy and how to change or add a value.

Is Time Line Therapy® included?
Yes, at an advanced level, taught at source. Dr Tad James created it and Dr Adriana James developed it further.

Do I need all of this if I only want one part?
The components are taught as an integrated whole because they operate as one. Learning values without beliefs, or submodalities without Meta Programs, gives you a technique rather than a capability.

Will I be able to run breakthrough sessions afterwards?
Master Coaching and breakthrough work are part of the curriculum. Fluency, as with everything, comes from repetitions with real clients after certification.

What does the terminology mean?
Our NLP glossary covers the core terms if you want to get oriented before enrolling.
