Chapter 3: Gen X & Older

Generation X, people born between 1965 and 1979, are now experiencing quite a bit of pressure, and that pressure seems to be ramping up. Times are changing and nothing that was clearly defined for the future seems to hold water as firmly as it once did. The time of reflection and contemplation to which they were accustomed is just not there. The fast pace of the changing times, the speed of technology, the responsibility to maintain and further increase their accomplishments creates an unprecedented level of stress.

The accumulation of duties and responsibilities—to highly perform and maintain the standard of life and peak earnings while caring for aging parents as well as their children who are just starting to make their way in the world—only intensifies the stress.

The “I’ll do it tomorrow” plan, whereby one could “sleep on it” to have time to think it through is gone. By the time you “sleep on it,” someone else has already applied your creative idea, or the great opportunity for the business or career deal went somewhere else.

And there is one more problem which seems the most unsettling. The Values of our society in general are changing. The whole culture is in the midst of a massive transformation. But where are we going? What is the future we don’t quite understand, or totally grasp?  This question is answered by naturally changing as well as and artificially-introduced new Values, due partly to the fast speed of technology advancements, but also to unpredictable events (like a pandemic), financial and economic discombobulation, fuel and food crisis, never-ending wars, and many more.


From the NLP perspective, all this “stuff” accumulates like a “blob” which is hard to deal with. Its results are massive stress, overwhelm, and anxiety. But a “blob” we call stress, anxiety, overwhelm and the like is made of many parts. Trying to deal with it is simply not efficient; it does not work well. The only way to find viable solutions is to unravel that blob into its component parts.

From the NLP point of view, the “blob” components are:

Ineffective strategies of deciding, getting motivated or staying reassured
Limiting Beliefs
Limiting Decisions (like “I can’t make the money I want,” “I can’t have a good relationship,” “I am afraid to proceed fast enough because I make mistakes,” “I am unsure of what to do now,” etc.
Misaligned Values
Conflicts between Values, goals and objectives
Negative anchors
Other mental constructs
