How NLP Works

How does NLP work? Here is an answer, one page or less, to a common question in NLP.

Did you ever wonder how NLP, Hypnosis and Time Line Therapy™ techniques work, and why they produce such great results? It may look like magic, but it’s not. It is the result of a very practical set of beliefs adopted by the client.

So…how does it work?

First of all the client suspends dis-belief. This is automatic—part of the process.

Think about it. Have you ever been at a sporting event where one team was really kicking bum and the losing team was really demoralized? I mean, they “knew” they couldn’t win. Heads bowed forward. Looking at the ground. Their physiology was not that of a winner. The winning team just “knew” they would win. And so both teams actualized their beliefs about the result of the sporting event.

Now, let’s say you are coach of the losing team. How will you get your team to win? Well, they will first have to suspend the belief they will lose. You’ve seen this happen when the losing team comes back from a 15 point deficit to win in the last minute of the game. Suddenly, everyone on the team that was formerly losing just knows they can! There’s a point where it becomes real. Now they know it – they can win. They suspended their disbelief.

There is also a convention in cinema (movies) where the audience suspends disbelief, and they believe in the possibility that the more unbelievable parts of the movie are not only possible, but happening now. For example, remember a Superman movie. Now, who could believe that a man could fly? But when you watch the movie, you can not only imagine that it is possible but also that it is real. You suspended your disbelief.

A similar thing happens in hypnosis. When the hypnotist says, “Close the eyes and relax the muscles around the eyes ‘till you can’t relax them any more. When they’re that relaxed then hold onto the relaxation, and test them to make sure they stay closed.” You know full well you could open them, but you don’t. In keeping the eyes closed you suspend your disbelief
